While in residence at
the University of Victoria, I had a VCR and black and white TV in my room; I
still own the latter. Usually the VCR was fairly reliable, but as it got older,
every so often it exhibited the annoying habit of eating tapes. Usually it
settled for stuff I’d recorded, but once I rented Manon of the Spring from the
University library, took it to my dorm, and started to play it. My VCR promptly
broke the tape. It was quite embarrassing,
while the guy at the till saying “But you just rented it.” True enough, but my
VCR didn’t care about that. I wasn’t
fined but I don’t think I ever rented any tape from that library again.
