Eastern Canada Trip 2013 Day 3 Saturday September 14 Toronto, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville

LAST UPDATED: October 31, 2025

This is the third of a series of posts dealing with my third trip to Eastern Canada. I’ve made minor corrections to these reports. Also, I’ve added additional thoughts with the hindsight of a year later or to add further clarification.  These are indicated by “NOW”.

The three women at the hostel were a bit risqué again last night. However, I was able to tune out outside noises a bit better and managed to get five to six hours' sleep. It must have been a deep sleep for I was very refreshed this morning. I walked to Union GO Station and got another daypass, this time to Hamilton. While there was an express bus there, the train cost the same so after breakfast at McDonald's at the station I took a Lakeshore West train (GO Transit) to Aldershot GO Station in Burlington and from there I transferred to an 18 bus (GO Transit) to City Hall in Hamilton.  Checking a few convenience stores on James St, I found one that sold day buspass for Hamilton Street Railway (HSR; all buses, no light rail despite the name). I wandered along King St, where a market was being set up. I noticed this video store that would only price movies upon request was gone. I wandered further north to the former location of Video Hits (gone), Heading back south, I visited Copps Coliseum.  I asked there if they had any memorabilia related to the TV series Power Play, which was partly filmed there. The guy at the ticket counter knew of the show but wasn't sure if they had anything so directed me to security. The door to security looked a bit forbidding so I decided not to bother.

[NOW: The hostel, Global Village Backpackers, is now closed as is that McDonald's that was in Union before renovations. The market was Downtown Hamilton Farmers’ Market. Copps Coliseum is now FirstOntario Centre.]

In Hamilton City Centre I visited Entertainmentdeals.ca (the woman was seven minutes late opening but still got Penn & Teller: Bulls—t season 8) then went to MacNab Trasnit Terminal, where I took the 35 bus (HSR) to Upper James St. I visited The Beat Goes On (got True Blood season 5 on blu-ray) then took a 27 bus (HSR) to Big B Comics. Some of their comics were downstairs but I couldn't find a light to see the comics and they were talking upstairs (plus the deal wasn't that good) so I headed off and took another 27 HSR back to MacNab Transit Terminal. Cheapies was setting up a sidewalk sale. In the meantime I ordered a $4.99 medium pizza from Gino's Pizza, went to Dr Disc (probably gone last year), grabbed the pizza and ate at the park separating north and south lanes on King St E. I sat close to the fountain, though the benches closest to the fountain had their backs to the fountain. I ate the pizza while shooing away wasps.

[NOW: Entertainmentdeals.ca and Cheapies are now closed. The park is Gore Park.]

I walked over to Select Video then returned to Cheapies' now open sidewalk sale and got a couple of DVD sets. I took an eastbound 5 bus (HSR). I realized that different 5's travelled on different streets so I got off at Gage St went north to Main St, and walked along Gage until a 1 bus (HSR) arrived that took me a short ways to Steel City Video, where I bought some DVDs and DVD sets. I grabbed a pop from the 7-11 and to a 1, then 11 bus (both HSR) to Van Wagner’s Beach, which was deserted despite the day having turned hot. I took another 11 HSR to Burlington Transit Centre, getting a transfer when I got on.

[NOW: Select Video and Steel City Video are now closed. The DVD sets were a collection of Nicolas Cage movies and a collection of Angelina Jolie movies.]

I used the transfer to take a 3 bus (Burlington Transit) to Burlington Mall, where I visited Cinema 1, located in the Food Court. I walked east along Fairview to Appleby Book Ranch, then another Beat Goes On. I took a 21 bus (Burlington Transit) to Burlington GO Station and from there took a Lakeshore West train (GO Transit) to Oakville GO Station. I accidentally grabbed an eastbound 4 bus (Oakville Transit; I was heading west) so I quickly doubled back. No west 4 in sight so I took a 28 bus (Oakville Transit) to another Beat Goes On. I walked south to Comic Connection on Speer.  They had a pop machine with a Let the Lord Decide button. I tried it and got a Diet Coke; not a favourite but better than a cherry drink. I walked along the 4 route, beating the 4 bus back to Oakville GO Station.

[NOW: That Cinema 1 and Appleby Book Ranch is now closed. Comic Connection moved and became Enter the Battlefield.]

There I took the Lakeshore West GO train. Once we were in Toronto I called my friend Aidan and we arranged a meet for tomorrow. A drunk was also making calls and I was worried he would disrupt mine, but he was quiet until I finished my call and then started up again. At Union GO Station I heading south to the waterfront, then walked north, getting another $4.99 Pizza Pizza deal; soon after I saw a restaurant called Wayne Gretzky's in a Blue Jays building (Pst! Wrong sport!). I considered getting a pop at Shoppers Drug Mart but changed my mine. Back at the hostel, waiting for a terminal, I noticed that one of the clocks was wrong; the four clocks show different cities and they have Los Angeles at four hours behind Toronto, not three.  I also overheard the woman at the desk trying to explain to someone on the phone repeatedly that their attempts to book until September 31 weren't working because Sept only has 30 days.

[NOW: Aidan and I actually ended up meeting during the week instead.]

Eastern Canada Trip 2013 Day 2 Friday September 13 Toronto, Peterborough, Oshawa

UPDATED: February 10, 2021

This is the second of a series of posts dealing with my third trip to Eastern Canada. I’ve made minor corrections to these reports. Also, I’ve added additional thoughts with the hindsight of a year later or to add further clarification.  These are indicated by “NOW”.

Having only had about three hours sleep before getting here, my first day here I only got a little over two. Partly it was distracting that some women in the room apparently prepared to go to a party with a theme of not being fully dressed (at least that's my theory), but it was humid and the hostel may be in the loudest intersection in Toronto: streetcar, sirens, honking, loud motors, loud talking below my room.  I was finally starting to sleep okay and then my alarm went off telling me it was time to start the day.

[NOW: The hostel, Global Village Backpackers, is now closed.]

I walked to Union GO Station (all transportation today GO Transit). Lots of construction there. The anatomically correct nude guy statue, gone last year, was back this year. I bought a daypass covering Peterborough, took the Lakeshore East train to Oshawa GO Station, then took the 88 bus to Peterborough Bus Terminal.  Got the front right top of the doubeldecker bus. An older guy beside me chatted with me a bit, which helped with fighting sleep.

[NOW: The statue is called Monument to Multiculturalism]

Peterborough was really cold, winter cold even.  I walked to Peterborough Square where I grabbed breakfast at McDonald's. I tried to get my receipt but the server snatched it away too quickly.  I also got some DVDs and a blu-ray set (Girls Season 2) at Disc Depot there. I visited Moondance, Jeff's Cards & Comics (not on my list, not yet open), Bluestreak Records; a store on my list beside it was gone. Switching from King to Water St. I passed a couple book stores on my list not yet open (Scholars West, Thea’s), visited Books n' Things, Dixon Books, A couple of books stores were gone apparently, but one was once in Peterborough Square, which has no full directory that I could find. I got some DVDs at Chumleighs (not on the list); bought some DVDs; very happy dealer; he told me the cold snap was an anomaly. I visited Mark Jokinen Books and Knotanew Books (latter not on my list). I walked along Milleniunm Park past the river whose name escapes me at the moment and I'm too sleepy to look it up. Was going to cross to the island but again, too cold.

[NOW: That McDonald's, Disc Depot, Moondance, Books 'N Things, and Dixon's are now closed. Jeff's became Grey Guardian Games before closing as well. The river is Otonabee River.]

Was hoping to take an earlier bus out of Peterborough but service is bi-hourly so after getting some schedules at Peterborough Bus Terminal so I returned to McDonald’s at Peterborough Square and had the worst bacon cheeseburgers I'd every tasted.; this time I didn't let the woman take away the receipt.  At the terminal I took a returning 88 bus (this time not at front but still on top) to Newcastle Carpool Stop. There I took a 90 bus, making it to the front seat around Bowmanville, which encompassed most of the ride.

I got off just before Oshawa Centre Mall (in Oshawa of course) and got DVDs at Deja Vu Discs (a pain to type in Word because it auto-corrects to the phrase, not the way the store spells it; the phrase has accents and a lowercase “v”). I visited Worlds Collide Comics. Comic Alley was gone from its old location but I remembered seeing it on the 90 bus so tracked down its new locations. There I confirmed that two video stores I'd never been to (one in Oshawa one in Whitby) were long gone, saving me a walk. It was cool and overcast out so I cut out a couple places I was lukewarm about. I walked to Star Records which I didn't care for the DVD collection of, but en route I found the Canadian Automobile Museum and paid the $5 to get in. Not huge but two floors; lots of vintage cars.  After the museum I went to Oshawa GO Terminal. I was going to go to Whitby but realized that I didn't want to be weighed down by comics at Comic Book Addiction (If there were even any cheap ones there) and there was nothing else to see. So I saw another 90 bus across the street so I took it back to Oshawa GO Station and returned to Toronto. En route transit police checked everyone's ticket.  A young woman new to Ontario's paid card system (PRESTO) made errors and while not fined did get a formal warning. She was quite distraught and upset at her friend for not giving her the heads up that she had to tap the card at the end of a trip and not just the start. The train ride was otherwise comfy and I fought sleep often.

[NOW: Star Records is now closed. Canadian Automobile Museum is now $16 for adults.Comic Book Addiction has moved.]

I dropped off stuff at the hostel; Toronto was also getting pretty cold, though not quite as cold as Peterborough. Heading north along Spadina I saw that TheatreBooks had moved to a new location and visited it. I ate dinner at Hero Burgers. I little pricey but needed their better quality burgers after those cheeseburgers earlier.  I walked to Yonge-Dundas Square. I think the same performers who I thought were professional quality last year were playing this time; if not the music and quality were comparable. Near the square I visited Future Shop, the new Silver Snail Comics location, HMV, the southernmost Yonge branch of Sunrise Records (there are three on Yonge I believe), then the BMV from yesterday. I fought sleep a little more waiting for the terminal to free up but now can turn in early and catch up; normally wouldn't turn in this early but hey, lots of days left this trip for evening walks in Toronto!

[NOW: TheatreBooks, that Hero Burgers, Future Shop, HMV, and the three Sunrise Records on Yonge are now closed. Yonge-Dundas Square is now Sankofa Square.Silver Snail comics has moved again.]

Eastern Canada Trip 2013 Day 1 Thursday September 12 Victoria to Toronto

This is the first of a series of posts dealing with my third trip to Eastern Canada. I’ve made minor corrections to these reports. Also, I’ve added additional thoughts with the hindsight of a year later or to add further clarification.  These are indicated by “NOW”.

My new camera got scratched just before the trip. Often it's not too bad but in some lighting it's pretty bad. Some rain coming but hopefully not as much as the last trip.

With only 3 hours' sleep, caught the 4:15 am Akal Airporter. I considered trying to get a bit of sleep but the music on the bus was just a little too loud for that.  At the airport I found out that I'd accidentally booked a window seat too close to the wing; luckily that got rectified just before takeoff.  I had breakfast at Tim Horton’s. I got a bottled Pepsi there so that after security I could fill it with water.

[NOW: The Akal Airporter was replaced with the YYJ Airporter before that closed as well.]

At security I got randomly selected for a search and was given the choice between a full body patdown and a hand test. I was told the hand test was faster; even if it had been the slower option that would still have been my pick.

Over half the flight was over the US and it didn't seriously started to cloud over until Michigan or thereabouts. I got a free can of Coke early on and then a glass of Coke later on. Got nice photos of Fargo (North Dakota is a wider state than I'd realized). The plane was initially early but got caught in a holding pattern over Waterloo (other flights delayed due to weather) and thus the plane arrived a bit late in "Toronto" (actually Pearson Airport is in Mississauga).  I meant to eat lunch at A&W but didn't end up passing it. I asked a security guard were it was but her first language didn't seem to be English and I don't think she knew what an A&W was. I was going to go to Tim Horton's instead but accidentally wandered into the start of the baggage area and couldn't turn back, nor could I leave the baggage area on the other side if I wanted my luggage back.

So after grabbing my suitcase I found my way to the bus area (all transit this day: Toronto Transit). The 192 Rocket bus was already there so I took it right away to Kipling Station, Etoicoke (part of Toronto, formerly separate). Got the front seat after the first seat which was handy for storing baggage.

[NOW: 192 Rocket has been renamed 900 Airport Express.]

At Kipling I took the Bloor-Danforth subway line to Spadina Station, where I transferred to the 510 streetcar, which I took to King St. A short walk took me to Global Village Backpackers hostel; no lockers within the room so I decided to move my $US to my backpack.

[NOW: The Bloor-Danforth line is now also called the 2 Line. Global Village Backpackers has closed down.]

Walking to Spadina & Queen, I had a late lunch at McDonald's. Walking east along Queen St, I passed the former Silver Snail comic shop (building demolished), HMV, BMV Express (recently closed down), then passed Condom Shack (definitely not in Victoria) and Old & New City Hall before walking north along Yonge to Yonge-Dundas Square. At the Square's water jets they had a giant playing card motif this time.

[NOW: HMV is defunct. Condom Shack has closed. Yonge-Dundas Square is now Sankofa Square.].

Walking to Edward St, I visited a still-open branch of BMV plus the so-called World's Biggest Bookstore, slated to close this year. I returned to Queen and stated heading west, passing the previous places but spending a bit more time at the City Hall area. Saw the water jets and the fountain with the animal head sculptures. I made it to Queen Video. There I bought some DVDs and asked about Silver Snail; it turns out it's right by Yonge-Dundas Square. Continuing west (to cut out stuff from my itinerary for Tuesday) I passed Criminal Records (gone; apparently these criminal records have been wiped clean) and visited Neurotica (DVDs, records; I glanced up at the x-rated section, saw the title Anal Rage, decided I didn't want to read any more DVD spines in that section).

[NOW: World’s Biggest Bookstore did close down, but not until 2014. Queen Video has closed, Neurotica has moved.]

Frantic City Records was gone; Eyesore Cinema next door had a DVD set I wanted but it was too pricey. Finishing my walk west along Queen for now, I visited 2Q Video before heading south to King St. Heading back east I noticed that two places I was going to visit for the first time were gone (King Hollywood Video, Art Metropole). I dropped off the DVDs at the hostel and continued east to Canada’s Walk of Fame; a bit hard to photograph this time because people were, well, walking over it. The old tiles are turning a rust red and becoming hard to read. Heading back west I had dinner at a Pizza Pizza I saw earlier. I got back to the hostel but instead of turning in decided to do a short jaunt south and then east. At a convenience store they had a less beat up copy of my map book for $30; decided to stick with the beat up copy for now.

[NOW: Eyesore Cinema has moved. 2Q Video has closed.]

Wanted to walk some more but realized I could easily wipe myself out on day 1 so forced myself back to the hostel to write this, then clean up and sleep.

View Towers Fire and Evacuation Story Links

Last Updated: June 29, 2014 3:04 pm

As one of the residents evacuated as a result of the View Towers fire on May 15, 2014, I thought it would be interesting to collect links found on the story so that they are all in one place for the benefit of anyone following the matter. Despite most of the links below being from Kate Derosa at the Times-Colonist, I have no bias towards her; she’s simply providing most of the coverage on the matter, therefore more links to be found.

If anyone has additional links or if any of the above go dead, let me know as I plan to update this regularly. Links are in chronological order as best as I’m able to make them, in order of original posting date (as opposed to last revision).
