Impatient People at View Towers Elevators

At View Towers elevators there’s a couple fascinatingrecurring phenomena. People will bewaiting to go up. An elevator will arriveletting people off, with the arrow pointing down. Rather than letting the doors close andreopen, people will wait until the doors are about to close and then push themopen again and charge in. This of course just results in the doors having toclose and reopen an extra time, because the arrow will only point up once thedoor closes entirely (and even this this assumes it’s not going down to one ofthe parking levels). So peopleconsistently guarantee themselves a longer wait to get upstairs by pushing opendoors that are about to reopen again anyway.

A similar thing people do is sometimes they’re press thedown and up buttons because they think the elevator will arrive sooner. It doesn’t speed things up and when the elevatorarrives it will usually show up first as the down elevator, thus meaning youhave to wait for the doors to close and open again before it becomes the upelevator.

The morale is, sometimes things go faster if you don’t tryto speed things up.

My Most Profitable Venture

While in Nanaimo one of the comic shops (Island Fantasy,later Upstart Comics, now defunct) wasgetting rid of its old comics for some ridiculously low price. Ten cents each Ithink. That made me think of anidea. I called around a couple bookstores. They would buy old comics for apercentage of the cover price. I’m thinking ten percent but it could have been25. This was in 1991-1992 so a very longtime ago. Regardless I realized I could make a decent profit but buying thosecomics whose original cover price was the highest (there were no ten centstickers so the book stores had no way of knowing how much I paid for them) andthen selling them to the book stores and getting more for them there than I hadoriginally paid. There were enough of these cheap comics around that I was ableto make a bit of a profit. Not enough to make me rich, but I did buy one ofthose thick Roger Ebert movie guides with my profit and still had money leftover. I think I might have more qualmsabout doing this now but it was a fun at the time to realize I had unearthed aneasy way to make a profit.

King Artur dressed in a red robe with gold hems. He wore acrown that said “Artur” on it. Meerlimdressed in dress, including a robe and a large triangular cap. Yellow stars,moons, etc. were scattered all over both.

Walllbreaker was glad that they knew they were on the sameside. Still, they might not realize that from the heroes’ perspective, theconflict with the Groovy Guys, and thus Token Woman, was long since over. They’dhave to play this carefully.

Token Woman responding to Artur’s growing remark, replied. “I’m from the future. The farther future thatis.”

Artur asked Meerlim? “Can this be true?”

Meerlim frowned. “It’s possible. Still tis strange that they would appear sosoon after the younger Token Girl arrived.”

“You’d be surprised how often this sort of thing happens,”said Wallbreaker. Normally he didn’tlike to openly display his level of self-awareness, but he wasn’t particularly interestedin getting into a big magic fight.

“We mean you no harm, sirs,” said O’Canada. “Token Woman is destined to meet you a fewmore times in your own future….”

“My head hurts,” remarked the Crack Heroine.

“… and she knows that you are good. Though I must confess that seeing how badlyher younger self was just injured….”

“Actually that wasn’t them”, replied Token Woman. “That was the Creature from the Greenish-BlueDimension. Long story.”

Artur asked. “Will thou submit to a scan?”

“We will,” said O’Canada. “Just understand that the Glowing Man here sometimes affects other energies.”

Meerlim nodded. “It should suffice to scan the rest of you.”

He started the scan. “Oh my you are a bloodthirsty one,” hesaid as he scanned the Missile. Arthur tensed up. Meerlim waved his handdismissedly. “But not a threat. At least not to us.”

“So what brings you to our castle?” asked Artur

“Aside from your clamps?” retorted the Crack Heroine.

Meerlim said to Artur, “You’ll have to forgive her, YourMajesty. My scan revealed traces of numerous psychoactive drugs in her system.It seems that these drugs give her heightened abilities, but are highly addictiveand adversely affecting her personality.”

“Hey!”

“However, they all seem to be genuine. But tell me, how did you start using drugs tofight crime?”

“Some Afghanistan scientists captured me on a trip there andused me to experiment on. Only it backfiredand I gained powers. I stole some of thedrugs after I beat up my tormentors, fled by way of a superjet I found (itoperated on mental commands so I didn’t need to know how to fly it) and when Igot home, my friend Dr. Beanhead and his mutated pet monkey Seedu whipped me upsome more of the stuff so I could fight frime.

Meerlim nodded, “Yes that would explain it.” Wallbreaker didn’t want to say so out loud,but he could have sworn at one point she’d told him that it was a trip toMoscow and that it was the Soviet government that captured her. No, that didn’t make sense. The USSR hadcrumbled well before she became a crime fighter.

O’Canada explained to Artur and Meerlim how the MasterPlotter had used his Plot Device to trap them on this world. “You have a lovely dimension, but we must getback home.”

“That is within my power,” replied Meerlim, “but we mustrequest a favour from you.”

“We figured that was likely,” O’Canada said.

Artur said, “Three villains have gotten a hold of the ThreeRods of Power. Alone they are a nuisancebut one we were willing to tolerate in order to hide our true nature from themultiverse. However, it seems they areconsidering formerly an allegiance with a few other ne-er do wells and mayrealize that the three rods together form the Triangle of Terror, and that istruly destructive. We therefore need youto acquire the Rods for us. I recommend do face them together one by oneinstead of splitting up and facing them as once, for the rods are still quitepowerful. If this is agreeable I willtell you what you need to know.”

The heroes agreed. Meerlim wave his wand and the seven heroes prepared to face their firsttask.

Why I Switched Barbers

I’m going to be vague on names to protect the guilty. I don’twant to turn this blog into a dirt slinging forum, but it’s too interesting astory not to blog about.

Anyway, my barber at the time knew someone that I knew. So one time I was getting my haircut as a practicaljoke he insisted that that other person had died. Understandably that made that particularbarber experience unpleasant. I decided to verify this with someone else and… itturned out to be a practical joke on the barber’s part. To a degree I can takea joke but thought that trying to convince be that someone I knew was dead wentbeyond the pale. On the plus side Ifound out that my replacement barber charged a buck less so it all worked out,except for the original barber.

12 DC Properties that Would Make a Fun TV Series

For purposes of this list, in order to think outside thebox, I’m ruling out those properties that have already had a series or pilot:Superman, Superboy, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Human Target, Birds of Prey, Aquaman. I also left out Green Arrow because a pilot’sin the works. I considered Immoral Man or Resurrection Man, but I decided thata series about a guy who dies every episode would be on the fast track to cancellation.

1. Deadman: Trapeze artist Boston Brand is killed but hisspirit remains on Earth to seek out his killer with the help of his abilitiesto possess people’s bodies

2. Dial “H” for Hero: A magical dial transforms itsrecipients into a different hero each time. I’d probably go with the Chris King/Vicki Grant versions because of thecharacter interplay

3. Doom Patrol: A team of misfits who gained powersthrough accidents that made them seem like freaks to the general public. I’d gowith the original team but make Elasti-Girl thinner when growing and fatterwhen shrinking in order to make her more of a misfit

4. Eclipso: Heroic scientist Bruce Gordon must try to stopthe evil and powerful Eclipso, who shares his body

5. Elongaterd Man: Ralph Dibny solves mysteries with theaid of his stretching powers and good humoured wife Sue

6. Hawk and Dove: Right wing Hank Hall and left wing DonHall or Dawn Graingerer a strong left winger gain enhanced abilities; tomaximize the drama, I’d probably have Don killed in the first episode andreplaced by Dawn

7. Hawkman and Hawkwoman: Carter and Sheira Hall fightscrime with flight or medieval weapons. If you go the reincarnated royalty routeyou could have flashbacks to past lives; if you go the space police officersroute you could have them learn our culture

8. Jonah Hex: Drop the powers from the movie and just havehim be a curmudgeonly gunfighter who follows the money

9. Nemesis: Thomas Tressor tries to balance the scales ofjustice using disguises, with face masks that vaporize after he’s done withthem

10. PhantomStranger and Doctor Thirteen: One is a supernatural being, the other is a ghostbreaker who doesn’t believe in the supernatural; circumstances keep findingthem on the same case.

11. Spectre:Jim Corrigan dies and becomes a supernatural being with extreme ways ofpunishing the guilty

12. Warthat Time Forgot: Soldiers fighting dinosaurs. Give the soldiers distinctpersonalities and make them aware of the strangeness of their situation

My 15 Favourite Superhero Movies 2000-2011 that Are Based on Comics

Limiting myself to live action ones, though there’s beensome decent straight to video cartoons

1. Batman Begins: Best use of Batman’s Bruce Wayne personain live action

2. Captain America: The First Avenger: I like the factthat he’s motivated to fight the bad guys simply because he hates bullies

3. Daredevil: While it has some cheesy moments, I like thelook at him as troubled hero

4. The Dark Knight: Heath Ledger rightly won an Oscar forhis take as the Joker

5. Hulk: Despite a weak final act, this is a nice cerebraltake on the monster hero

6. Incredible Hulk: Less cerebral than its predecessor, stillan intelligent fun action movie

7. Kick-Ass: Very nice twisted humour

8. Punisher War Zone: I realize I’m fudging the definitionof superhero here (but then, Hulk, V, and most of the Watchmen characters arealso arguably borderline cases), but it definitely has a superhero feel to it;some nicely twisted kills

9. Spider-Man 2: While I’m not a big fan of the originalSpider-Man franchise overall, this was my favourite installment in it; somenice bits of heroism and look at identity issues

10. TheSpirit: Yes, I know it’s not exactly true to Eisner’s vision; it’s just so darntwisted it won me over anyway

11. Thor:Nice look at what it means to be worthy of great power

12. Vfor Vendetta: A fun socio-political thriller.

13. Watchmen:Surprisingly faithful to the original deconstructionist work

14. X2:X-Men United: A nice look at the hero team under siege, with some nicecharacter arcs

15. X-Men:First Class: A fun look at the evolution of the early stages of the complicatedProfessor X-Magneto relationship

My choices might surprise some people. Sorry, Spider-Man, while having some nicemoments has too many dramatic missteps to make this list. I really do feel that Daredevil and Hulk areunderrated. So are Fantastic 4 and GhostRider, though not enough to make the list. .

2012 should be interesting, with Ghost Rider: Spirit ofVengeance, Dark Knight Rising, Avengers, and Amazing Spider-Man all scheduledto come out.

200 Blog Posts in 200 Days

This is my 200^th post since I’ve attempted to dothe blog more or less daily. Obviouslythere’s no way to do this perfectly (I posted extra times prior to longer tripsto keep up) but this is indeed my 200^th post in as many days. It hasn’t always been easy to come up withthings to say (one reason why I started going back to trivia lists and startedreformatting some of my more interesting old e-mails such as trip reports). Thankfully every so often some new oddballthing has come along to talk about and it’s been fun at times going back downmemory lane whenever something jobs my nearly 41-year-old memory. I do recommend people giving it a try.Certainly it keeps you on your toes if you have to come up with at leastsomething to talk about every day for 200 days straight (or longer, since a full year has always been the main target). My weekly fiction, a recent addition, willprobably continue for now, if only because that way I only have to come up withnon-fiction posts six times a week instead of seven. Let me know how you’ve been finding these andif you have any suggestions.

10 Decent Superhero Movies Not Based on Comic Book Characters, 2000-On

We seem to be in a golden age for superhero movies, not justin terms of comic book based ones but more independent versions as well, starting,coincidentally(?) the same year that X-Men came out. To wit:

1. The Specials (2000): Mainly heroes talking in theirheadquarters. Perhaps the weakest of this bunch but at least an attempt to dosomething a bit different with a superhero movie.

2. Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000): While therehave been comic books based on the Toxic Avenger, he started as a moviecharacter first. This installment has fun with the old chestnut of the heroencountering an evil universe version of his home world. Typical over the topTroma silliness ensues.

3. Superguy: Beneath the Cape (2000): Mock documentary ofa flawed hero weith Superman-like powers.

4. Unbreakable (2000): By far the best of the superheromovies to come out in 2000 (including X-Men): A mysterious man manoeuvres a guywho can’t be harmed and who wants to live a low key life into become a hero.

5. Ultrachrist! (2003): Jesus returns to Earth and decidesto become a superhero to help get his message across.

6. Sidekick (2005): A social outcast finds a guy with powersand tries to train him into becoming a superhero so he can be his would-be hero’ssidekick.

7. Special (2006): Not to be confused with The Specials above,a parking attendant is given experimental medication that deludes him intobelieving he has powers.

8. Paper Man (2009): A frustrated writer with a superherofor an imaginary friend has trouble connecting with real people; he befriends ayoung woman with similar issues. Perhaps not the most complementary film topeople who enjoy superhero entertainment, but still a decent low key drama.

9. Defendor (2009): A man with developmental disabilities butwith a certain level of strategy understanding decides to become a low rentBatman style hero and take on the underworld.

10. Super(2010): A man whose wife leaves him for her drug dealer, inspired by a youngwoman who works at a comic shop, decides to become a costumed vigilante, resultingin a gradual escalation of violence and its consequences.

Of the above, four of these stand out as exceptional: Unbreakable,Sidekick, Defendor, and Super. All butUnbreakable are partly comedies but even those get serious when the plot callsfor it. All four have a fascinating maincharacter who draws you into their world.

A note about Kick-Ass: In many ways it has a similar independentfeel to it. However, it is based on a comic that had just started at the time work on the movie began, hence its exclusion.

Misadventures in Not Dealing Drugs

I am not a drug dealer. To most people who know me thatshould be a pretty obvious statements, but a few times people have tried to buydrugs from me. Two such times jump out.

Once, around 5:15, 5:30 in the morning I was waiting outsideView Towers for a friend whom I was going on a daytrip to Vancouver with. In a very low voice he asked if I had anydrugs. I shook my head (or maybe said no; I can’t recall). A while later,apparently wondering if I hadn’t heard him, he asked again in a slightly loudervoice. I shook my head again (same caveat). A while later he tried one moretime, this time in normal voice. If myfriend hadn’t come, I half-suspect he would have eventually worked his way upto a megaphone.

Then yesterday a guy asked, “Got some rock?” in front of achurch. He asked in a low voice, and then because I genuinely hadn’t made outwhat he asked the first time, he tried one more time in a normal voice. Happily he took no for an answer but giventhe location it did hammer home that where addicts are concerned, literally nothingis sacred.

Looking at Token Girl’s unconscious form, Wallbreaker couldn’thelp but notice how 1960s her hair looked. That actually reminded him of something that was buigging him. He had a vivid memory of buying a 1960s carat full price less than ten years ago. And during a trip to the States he had a vivid memory of shaking handswith JFK, even though Bush Jr. was in power then. For that matter, JFK was deadbefore he was born. So why did he want to recall a meet with Bush as Kennedy?

O’Canada said to Token Woman, “I realize this must be hardon you, seeing your younger self like that. But you need to tell us what you remember of this so we can avoid anytime paradox.”

Token Woman’s face was white as a sheet as she tried not tolook at her younger, bloodied self, though she found herself sneaking looksanyway. “It was a long time ago, and Igot hit pretty bad. My item was on thisworld and a Cyclops flung a rock at me. It hit me in the head. I managed toflee and then… here’s where it gets pretty hard to remember. I was pretty dazedfrom the rock and the fall and… Crack Heroine, what are you doing?!?”

“Saving your life, duh!” Crack Heroine was injecting TokenGirl with… Wallbreaker didn’t want to know what that stuff was, really.

Rita said, “I think there’s another reason why you were sodazed.”

Token Woman whimpered. “I… guess this is what saved me. I didn’t know before. Now I’m not sure I’m glad I know.”

O’Canada asked Crack Heroine, “Should I be worried?”

Crack Heroine shook her head. “She might have a fewhallucinations, might have the urge to run around naked…”

“What?!?” exclaimed Token Woman

“Doesn’t happen to everyone. But she’ll be fine. She must orher older whiny self wouldn’t be here.”

Token Woman started to say something; Wallbreaker mutteredto her, “Let it go; it’s probably what saved her.”

O’Canada said, “I’m sorry, Token Woman, but we really needto know. Do you recall seeing any of us?”

“I… I’m not sure. I was pretty dazed. And I think I didhallucinate, though I can’t recall what I hallucinated. I may have seen some of you but I justremember a jumble of images. I do recall being found by Mr. Groovy a whilelater.”

“You’d best fly off before your younger self awakens anyway,to be safe. Rita, will you maintain a link again?”

“No problem,” Rita replied. Token Woman flew off.

Token Girl started to stir. She opened her eyes slightly in the Glowing Man’s generaldirection. “That light…. am I dying?”

“Not anymore,” Wallbreaker replied, as Glowing Man slowlymoved out of Token Girl’s line of vision.

Rita said, “Token Woman sees Mr. Groovy. He’s just taken outthe Cyclops with his Groovinator and grabbed an artifact.”

O’Canada said, “Tell Token Woman to call out to him andpretend to fall nearby, out of Token Girl’s sight, but close. Do it quickbefore he notices she looks different. Missile, do you have your net.”

“Yup.” He netted the other heroes and they quickly shotforward, out of range of where Token Girl and Mr. Groovy were. Token Womanjoined them soon after.

“That was way too close,” she said.

“Whine whine whine,” said Crack Heroine.

Token Woman looked like she was going to say something elsebut instead said, “Thank you.”

“De nada. It’s my job.”

O’Canada said, “Should the rest of the team be out of thecastle now?”

Token Woman nodded.

“Okay. No time for subtlety. Missile, take us there before then get back!”

As they reached the castle, there were grabbed by two bandsof solid light. “Oh, no,” said TokenWoman. “It’s the Calamatic Clamps of Clovis!” The clamps took them inside thecastle to the throne room. King Arturand Meerlim were there. The king looked them over. He said, “Well now, Token Girl, you’vecertainly grown a lot in the past couple of minutes!”

Baby Outside Thrifty Foods in Saanich Centre

Once circa 1995, while I was still working for the White Spotat Saanich Centre, I headed to work via the upper area of the shopping centre.As I passed the Thrifty Foods I saw a shopping cart when someone had left theirbaby, probably while grabbing groceries; the baby didn’t seem too thrilled bythis. Part of me wanted to just briefly grabthe baby just to demonstrate how easy it would have been for someone to abductthe baby. I didn’t, of course. I doubt anyone would have believed that I wasjust trying to make a point. But it wasstill annoying to see a baby just left outside the store like that. Unfortunately there wasn’t time to wait untilthe parent showed up to lecture them. That baby would be a teenager by now; hope they’re not too messed up. And still alive.

· Hollywood Video (video rental): Sleater-Kinney Road in Lacey; I’vesince visited an unaffiliated store of the same name in Sooke

· Island Fantasy (comic shop): Market Square, Victoria, though Icontinue to visit the post-franchise Upstart Comics in Nanaimo for a whileafter

10 Movie Trailer Glossary Terms

Hereare ten terms I’ve come up with for movie trailers

1. Critic Collection Trailers: Trailers that spend a fair bit of timequoting critics who liked the movie

2. Executive Summary Trailers: Trailers that summarize the movie as awhole so well that that the viewer feels that actually seeing it’s unnecessary.

3. Fooled You Ad: Prior to the showing of actual trailers, when whatappears to be a movie trailer ultimately proves to be an ad for a computer game, car,etc.

4. Guess the Movie Phenomenon: With all the remakes (of old moviesand older shows) and prequels/sequels out there, the experience a viewer has ofassuming a movie is probably one of the above and trying to guess which one.

5. Incongruous Trailer: Trailers marketed to people seeing anentirely different film and who aren’t necessarily the trailer movie’s targetaudience (actual example: showing the trailer for Precious before Zombieland).

6. Ohhhh Ha Ha Trailers: Trailers that start out serious with rising tensionuntil something funny happens and the viewer realizes it’s actually a comedy.

7. Only One Man Speech: Movies that tell you that in such a such kindof world/situation, only one man (rarely one woman) can resolve the matter athand

8. Three-D Groan: The audible groan in the audience when at the endof the trailer the words “in 3-D” appear

9. We are Family Rule: Every movie about a dysfunctional family mustplay the song We are Family in itstrailer.

10. Where’s the Hook? Trailer: A trailer that mainly just show everybodyhappy and hugging, which is great except the viewer is left wondering what isthe situation that the characters are supposed to be dealing with

The View Towers Flood This Morning

This morning I was woken up at (I think) 3:44 (maybe 4:45)by the sound of running water. I thought maybe my bathtub hadn’t gotten turnedoff the night before properly and got out of bed to turn it off. Well, no, it was water coming down from thefloor above. I phoned security and wastold they already knew about it and were waiting for the plumber. I was gladthey were on it but at the same time my bathroom was already pretty flooded soI wouldn’t have minded being woken up sooner. I grabbed whatever towels, shirts etc. were handy to soak up the water. Atfirst I used a large bowl to catch the water but later switched to the largebucket at the bottom of my fridge. ThenI realized that a box just outside the bathroom full of travel souvenirs neededto be moved. Then I noticed comics and other books on the floor of thebathroom. Then I noticed a new book in a nearby closet was now soaked. I movedwhatever I could around and phone security again about a mop. They didn’t havetime for that because they were helping the plumber but he didn’t think theyhad one anyway.

After things were more in control inside my apartment and nonew water was coming in, I opened the door and saw that the hallway wassoaked. I learned from a neighbour’scomments it was from three floors above. Also one door over so neighboursactually got it even worse than I did. I took some photos as evidence and upona neighbour’s request took photos of his suite as well. Not sure at this point what I’ll do with thembut they’re evidence if needed. I just wish I had taken photos while the waterwas still coming down.

Later I checked then other floors and confirmed that therewas in fact water on the carpet up to three floors above but not anyhigher. In the hallway my floor got hitharder than the upper floors; in fact upon my return to my floor I noticed ahole in the hallway ceiling probably caused by the water, which is still coming down in that location.

Wallbreaker woke up to find himself on a field. He was the first to wake up. The other members of the Impossible 5, plusToken Woman and the Missile were also here.

In the background there was a castle. This probably meant they were in the past,though there were a few futures that had medieval looking castles as well,usually with mute knights who turned out to be robots.

Rita woke up next. She looked around. “I think I’ve been here before.” Oh oh. Sometimes when she said things like that it was an early warning thather back story was about to change again. Wallbreaker decided to try to deflect that line of thought with a joke. “You’vebeen everywhere and every time,” he said.

Rita laughed. “Yes, Iguess I have at that. I like the way youput things big guy.”

The others started to awake. Everyone instinctively startedmoving away from the Glowing Man.

O’Canada said, “Ifear you’ve been separated from your family, Token Woman.”

“That’s fine,” she replied. “It’s always an honour to work with the Impossible 5.”

O’Canada turned to the Missile. “I trust you can keep things non-lethal?”

The Missile nodded. “If it’s a robot it’s toast. Otherwise I’llrespect your wishes until this mission is over.”

“Fair enough for now,” O’Canada replied.

He turned to the Crack Heroine. “Ready to get powered up? We could use you to scout ahead.”

She shook her head. “Sorry,OC. I always keep a supply foremergencies but we’re pretty far from home and might be here awhile. I’d better conserve my stash until we reallyneed it.”

“Okay. Rita, Wallbreaker, and I, and especially Glowing Manaren’t very good for recon. Missile andToken Woman, you can both fly. Missileis faster but can’t shift direction very easily once he’s in motion. So…”

“I’m on it,” she replied.

As she flew off, Crack Heroine muttered, “Yay for the goodytwo-shoes.”

O’Canada replied, “She may be that, but she’s good at whatshe does. I’m honoured to have her with us. Rita, can you maintain a telepathic link with her?” Rita nodded.

Moments passed and then Rita said, “Uh oh. The Groovy Guysare here.”

Wallbreaker asked, “Uh, why is that bad news?” He had asinking feeling he knew, but he was downplaying his intelligence still.

“All the GroovyGuys, including the Blazer and another Token Woman, or rather Token Girl as shewas called then. Our Token Woman’srealized she been here before. We haveto be careful or else Token Woman will run into her own past self.”

“Uh, how far in the past?” asked the Glowing Man.

Rita paused as she checked with Token Woman. “Near the startof their career.”

“They probably still think I’m a villain, then,” said the GlowingMan.

O’Canada said, “Okay. You’ll also need to also stay hidden. Well, as much as you can atleast. At least Token Woman should beable to tell us a fair bit about the castle.”

Token Woman arrived back. “I guess Rita’s already filled youin about the Groovy Guys. We’re onEarth-X32B, in the year 912 AD. Thecastle belongs to King Artor. NotArthur, Artor. He has a wizard named Meerlim. All told we might not have picked the worst world to wind up in, as they’llprobably be able to send us back. The problemis, they’ll probably ask us to perform some mission first. We’ll need to get some items from them fromthe space-time continuum. They seethemselves as guardians of the multiverse and keep stashing stuff that’sdangerous to other worlds.”

O’Canada asked, “And how do we know that if we give them theitems we won’t use them for evil themselves?”

“It’s a long story, but we did find proof that they aregood, but you have a point. We weresuspicious at first. In fact our initial meeting didn’t go so well.”

With that the unconscious form of the younger Token Girl fell from the sky to the ground infront of them. Rita looked at her andthen turned to Token Woman and gasped. “Youryounger self is dying!”

Last Night’s Insomnia

What to write about when you had insomnia the night beforeand are having trouble thinking of stuff to write about? Well, write about theinsomnia. And yes I’m aware of the ironyof doing this after the previous blog post was on a disturbing dream.

When I checked my answering machine I put my bag with a bookI needed to duse use for a project in a different location than I’d thought. Solater I thought I had lost the bag and had trouble sleeping because I stillreally wanted to do that project. I e-mailed a friend I had just finishedhanging out with in case she had it (it was too late to phone) and looked uplost and found info for a transit bus I’d been on. I also kept looking where itshould have been. I did a partial version of the post I had wanted to type withthe book in the hopes that would help with the sleep. Not really. Finally Idecided to doublecheck my answering machine… whereupon I felt the missing bag.So I then typed the post I had tried to type earlier and hoped that I couldfinally get to sleep. Only then I was too wound up. I lay on my bed and feltlike I had been awake all night, only time did pass very fast and I did laterrecall a short bit with Mr. T that must have been from a dream. So I must haveslept, but very lightly. Probably onlythree hours total if that. Oddly I felt wide awake for most of the day andfairly normal really and only just got sleepy a few minutes ago.

Strange and Disturbing Dream Last Night

A woman and I (she may have been my mom in part of the dream but not all of it) while working as an auxiliary for the police force and found a carwreck. My partner phoned the actualpolice who came and investigated. Wesearched the car and I think through notes and the like determined that a womanhad crashed the car because she had snapped and decided to kill her husband andchild because her baby was “mutated” (in the dream’s terms that mean it haddeformities; no X-Men like powers). A large bodybag or garbage bag (probablymore the former) was found. My partner or the cop did a quick check andconfirmed it was the husband. We found asmall garbage bag which I correctly guessed had the “mutated” baby inside; anote inside seemed to further suggest that (I think there was a bag inside abag and the note may have been attached to the inner bag). My dream made nodistinction between indoors and outdoors, so, being squeamish I went into myapartment’s backroom while they checked that bag, though candy on the floorprevented me from closing the bathroom door entirely. I noticed that more timewas passing than should be needed to confirm that it was in fact the baby inthe bag. So trying to look away I leftthe bathroom to find out if they were done yet; I think they almost were. While little left happened in this scenario Idon’t recall; I think I woke up around then.

Recent View Towers News

Less than two weeks ago I arrived at View Towers as the policewere leading someone else out in cuffs.

Some abandoned garbage was in the stairwell for multiple days.

A few days ago a guy at the elevators graciously offered tobeat anyone up who was so inclined. For some reason there were no takers. I didhesitate before getting in the elevator with him, but the elevators arenotoriously slow and I only needed to go up a floor (the way the building isdesigned, I couldn’t take the stairs up).

Then yesterday the fire alarm went off. My neighbour who keeps shouting about burningin hell, not realizing the irony of what he was saying, poked his head out thedoor and kept repeating “Again! Again! Again!” I went downstairs and got some great nighttime photos of people casually entering the building either people they had a key or were being buzzed in.

My Earliest Memories

My earliest memories were either from Burnaby, during myfirst couple years, or Surrey, where I spent the next few years. Maybe the first one is of Burnaby and theother of Surrey.

My single earliest memory is actually of me lying down,maybe in a crib wondering if I really exist, and if so how is thatpossible. My next earliest memory was ofgetting out of my crib of my own accord and greeting my parents, and from thatmy parents realizing that it was time to switch me to a regular bed. I might have the order reversed. I have astrong recollection of the existence thing happening first, but I don’t recallbeing enclosed in anything. Likely I wasin a crib still but because I wasn’t consciously thinking of that, my mind’seye now views it as a bed. Not the longest stories to be sure, but remember Iwas less than five at the time, so I’m probably fortunate to have even thoseshort flashes of memory.
